The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issues the mechanic certificate under 14 CFR Part 65 with two ratings: Airframe (A) and Powerplant (P). Candidates who hold both are known as A&P mechanics — the standard credential for aircraft maintenance in the United States. Certification requires passing three FAA knowledge tests (General, Airframe, and Powerplant), accumulating supervised practical experience (30 months for both ratings, or 18 months for either one), and successfully completing an oral and practical (O&P) exam administered by a Designated Mechanic Examiner (DME).
The three knowledge tests cover distinct subject areas defined in the Aviation Mechanic Airman Certification Standards (FAA-S-ACS-1): General (AM.I — basic electricity, drawings, weight & balance, materials and processes, FAA regulations), Airframe (AM.II — structures, hydraulics, landing gear, flight controls, fuel, cabin atmosphere, fire protection), and Powerplant (AM.III — reciprocating and turbine engines, propellers, fuel metering, ignition, lubrication, and engine electrical systems). Each test is 2 hours, with a passing score of 70%.
Sky License is designed to complement your training program by providing AI-powered practice questions, adaptive difficulty that adjusts to your knowledge level, and an AI Tutor that explains complex topics in plain language.
